Inclusive Makerspaces

True innovation requires a seat at the table for everyone. Drawing on research regarding makerspaces and students with severe disabilities, we provide specialized consulting to help schools, libraries, and community hubs transform their maker environments into truly inclusive spaces.

We move beyond simple ADA compliance, focusing on adaptive tool workflows, sensory-friendly layouts, and pedagogical strategies that empower students with significant physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges to become creators, not just observers.

What We Offer

  • Accessibility Audits for Makerspaces: Comprehensive evaluations of physical layouts, tool heights, and equipment interfaces (such as 3D printers and laser cutters).
  • Adaptive Tooling & Jigs: Designing and 3D printing custom assistive devices that allow students with limited mobility to operate machinery safely and independently.
  • Inclusive Curriculum Design: Developing project-based learning modules specifically tiered for students with severe or multiple disabilities.
  • Staff & Educator Training: Evidence-based workshops on facilitating “making” for students with high support needs.
  • Sensory Environment Mapping: Optimizing makerspace atmospheres (lighting, acoustics, and visual clutter) to better support neurodivergent learners.

Our Approach

Our approach is grounded in the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and informed by academic research. We believe that a makerspace is only as successful as its most excluded user. By integrating technology directly into the maker process, we help organizations foster an environment where students with severe disabilities can develop agency, problem-solving skills, and a sense of belonging through making.
